Shetland , meaning, Old Norse, from the Viking age
If your interests lie with bird life or sea mammals, also archaeology and hill-walking, with spectacular sea cliffs, and wonderful wild flowers, and arts and crafts or simply exploring some of the most remote and beautiful islands in Britain, The Shetland can offer you a lifetime of interesting possibilities.
Sumburgh airport is the main airport in the Shetland Islands. It is located down on the southern edge of the Shetland Mainland, nearly 26 miles south of the town of Lerwick. With direct flights from Sumburgh to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Kirkwall. And in the summer, there is also service across to Bergen, leaving twice a week on a Wednesday and a Saturdays this happens from the end of May until late August.
Public transport can be quite limited and sometimes infrequent in the Shetlands. Hiring a car is probably the best way to see these amazing islands and the many sights that they have to offer you. The roads are generally quite quiet so you won't get stressed out driving around here.
